Robert Liddell Richardson [r.2.2.6.5.3]

Robert Liddell Richardson was the third child of Thomas Richardson & Margaret Ann Liddell born April 22nd 1884 at Seaham Harbour.

In 1891 Robert, his brother, 2 sisters & parents were living at North Terrace, Dawdon & his father was a grocer.

Robert’s father died in 1893 & his mother remarried.  The 1901 census shows him living with his mother, sister Eleanor & step-father William Farish, a coal miner, & half-brother Norman Farish.  Their home was Sunderland St, Houghton-le-Spring & Robert was a mason’s apprentice.

Robert emigrated to the US in 1908 & was recorded in the US 1910 census as boarding in Throop, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania & working as a miner.  He returned to England from Pennsylvania in April 1911.  On sailing back to the States in May 1911 he gave his last address in England as 33 Ocean View, Whitley Bay (his mother’s address) & his final destination was Throop, Pennsylvania.  He was still single & his occupation was brick layer.

Robert married Hilda Stephens on February 17th, 1913 in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.  Hilda was born February 25th, 1885 the daughter of Eliza & Edwin Stephens, a coal miner.  The Stephens family had emigrated in 1887 & the 1900 US census shows them living in Jermyn, Lackawanna.  Robert and his wife Hilda were listed in naturalization records in Pennsylvania, USA.

The 1920 census show Robert & Hilda living at Jefferson Ave, Jermyn Ward 1, Lackawanna.  He was working as a mason.

In March 1922 Robert & Hilda applied for a passport & gave their address as Lincoln Avenue, Jermyn Ward, Lackawanna.  The purpose of their trip was to visit his mother & they were to sail on the Mauretania on April 4th 1922. The ship’s manifest gave their destination as 7 Hawthorns, East Boldon.

Robert & Hilda continued to live in Jermyn, Lackawanna as shown in the 1930 census.  Robert was recorded as a mason at the coal mine.  They appear not to have had any family.

Hilda & Robert are recorded as visiting England in April 1932 & gave the address of their destination as 9 Hartington St, Sunderland so were presumably visiting Robert’s sister Eleanor.  They returned to US in May 1932.  They made another return visit in June 1932 & again in April 1936 & returned to US in May 1936.

Robert died on June 11th, 1937 at 531 Lincoln Avenue, Jermyn, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania & was buried June 14th at Valley View Cemetery, Montdale.

The 1940 census shows widowed Hilda boarding at Ward 2, Throop, Lackawanna.

Hilda died on May 5th, 1950 & was buried May 9th at Valley View Cemetery, Montdale.
